Smoking during Pregnancy

by Bellysonic

smoking during pregnancyChildren born to women who smoke during pregnancy are not at increased risk for autism, according to a new study.

This is according to an article on the Health.com’s website Jan 20, 2012.

In this study, researchers analyzed data from nearly 4,000 Swedish children with autism and a control group of 39,000 children without autism. The results showed that 19.8 percent of the children in the autism group and 18.4 percent of those in the control group had mothers who smoked during pregnancy.

The study leader does however go on to say that smoking during pregnancy is still unhealthy for both the mother and for the fetus.

The Drug that Keeps on Giving!

A recent AP article reported the following wonderful news about a drug used almost 50 years ago:

A drug that millions of pregnant women took decades ago to prevent miscarriage and complications has put their daughters at higher risk for breast cancer and other health problems that are showing up now, a new federal study finds.

The report goes on to say that in the end it was discovered the drug didn’t work. So they didn’t help prevent miscarriages, but gave the gift of 2nd generation infertility and cancer.

DES, or diethylstilbestrol, was widely used in the United States, Europe and elsewhere from the 1940s through the 1960s to prevent miscarriage, premature birth, bleeding and other problems. Many companies made and sold it as pills, creams and other forms.

Studies later showed it didn’t work. The government told doctors to stop using it in pregnancy in 1971, after DES daughters in their late teens and 20s were found to be at higher risk of a rare form of vaginal cancer. Further research has tied DES to infertility and various pregnancy problems.

Ladies – take care! Be very wise about what drug you put in your body anytime, but especially when you are carrying another life!

Resveratrol May Prevent Metabolic Syndrome

by Bellysonic

resveratrol metabolic syndromeResveratrol, the mysterious molecule found in many foods and especially red wine, may provide a way to reduce the risks of metabolic syndrome in infants.

According to the National Institute of Health’s National Center for Biotechnology Information, Metabolic syndrome is

“a name for a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.”

And according to Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, “human offspring that have trouble growing in the womb have an increased risk of developing metabolic problems later in life.”

In their research they found that “administering resveratrol to the young offspring of lab rats after weaning actually prevented the development of a metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by glucose intolerance, insulin resistance and higher deposits of abdominal fat.”
